Count Joseph."Baron of the Galilee" turned into a devout Christian who was dedicated to
spreading the Christian doctrine and building new churches.
His activity bore fruit and at the beginning of the ninth century there were
already five churches and 30 clergymen in Tiberias.
Archeological excavations in Tiberias revealed a Byzantine church in which a
rock, for moorage of boats, is sanctified, as having been in the service of the
apostles.
The crusaders built a church in Tiberias, dedicated to St. Peter. In the church
yard there is a statute of St. Peter, a copy of the one in Rome, given to the church in 1883.
